Geospatial Tool Development

Agriculture in the San Joaquin Valley plays a pivotal role in the regional economy, responsible for over half of California's agricultural production and produces about a quarter of the United States' food. Long and flat, the valley’s hot, dry summers are followed by cool, foggy winters that make it one of the most productive agricultural regions in the world. Today, crops include grapes, tomatoes, hay, sugar beets, nuts, cotton and a multitude of other fruits and vegetables. I worked with a confidential client specializing in precision agricultural equipment to target regions of the Central Valley for specific business expansion based on hydrogeological and political considerations.

My work includes:

  • Develop codes to download, clean and organize several satellite datasets representing the hydrology and geological features of the area of interest.

  • Create a scoring framework to evaluate region specific agricultural/water use policies based on surface water availability and groundwater extraction.

  • Developed a tool using ArcGIS ModelBuilder to leverage these datasets and assign a score to represent regions favorable for business expansion.
